About Boating Safely is an 8 hour program. This is a vital course for any boater that covers boat handling, trailering, navigation rules, VHF radio, and safe boating practices. Successful completion of this course satisfies NYS education requirements for Personal Watercraft (jet ski) operation and may qualify for boating insurance discounts.

You must be at least 10 years old to take this course. Although not mandatory, except of PWC operators, adult boating education is strongly recommended. Upon a passing grade on the exam the student will receive their safety certificate.

You must hold a safety certificate if:
- In order to operate a personal watercraft within New York the operator must be a minimum of 14 years of age and completed a safe boating course. All users of personal watercrafts must carry the safety certificate at all times while operating the pwc.

- You wish to operate a motorboat and you are at least 10 years old and less than 18 years old. The required boating safety certificate must be carried by the minor at all times while operating the boat.

- Individuals less then 18 years old who have not successfully completed a boating safety course may only operate a vessel while under the direct supervision of an individual who is 18 years old or older. .

What will happen if I do not have a boating safety certificate?
If convicted of a first violation you can be fined not less than $25 or no more than $100, or by imprisonment for not more than seven days, or by both fine and imprisonment. For a second conviction, fines and imprisonment terms increase.
